Sweet & Spicy Korean Style Shrimp

Sweet & Spicy Korean Style Shrimp

Don’t you love a meal that not only tastes delicious, but can also be cooked in 30 minutes? Yeah, us too….. This sweet & spicy Korean style shrimp is one of our favourite 30 minute meals! It’s sweet, spicy and saucy – the perfect combination.

Why we love this sweet and spicy shrimp

This Korean style shrimp dish is JUST the right combination of sweet and spicy. Being Canadian, our love for maple syrup is REAL, and we jump on any opportunity to use it for cooking.

We also love cooking with shrimp. Not only is it an affordable source of protein, but you can use it in so many different ways! The possibilities are endless. Shrimp also defrosts and cooks FAST, so we love to use when we forget to take something out of the freezer in the morning and don’t have a ton of time.

Want to know another great thing about this sweet and spicy shrimp (told you we love it!)? Besides cooking the rice in a separate dish, everything gets added to the same saucepan so there is minimal mess at the end! Nothing feels better than an easy clean-up after a delicious meal.

If you are someone who loves spicy food, this recipe has your name written all over it! However, just like many of our recipes you can always tone it down.

Modifications

We didn’t add any vegetables originally into this recipe, but since we have tried broccoli and bell peppers! They paired well with the shrimp and the sauce and we recommend adding them in to jazz the dish up a bit! *Before adding the peppers make sure to sauté them.

Always remember, you can make this a spicy as you would like! The chili paste is what gives it the most spice. So you can definitely adjust the amount you use based on your spice tolerance! When we try new recipes that are spicy, we generally add in the spice slowly to make sure we can handle it!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Shrimp, uncooked
  • cup maple syrup
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce*
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, fresh or ground
  • 1 tablespoon chili paste, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon natural peanut butter
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoon corn starch
  • green onion, chopped to garnish
  • sesame seeds to garnish

Instructions

  • In a large saucepan, add in maple syrup, honey, soy sauce, water, ginger, chili paste, peanut butter, garlic powder, sesame oil and corn starch. Whisk together over medium heat and let simmer for 10 minutes. Stirring occasionally.
  • While the sauce is simmering, prepare shrimp. Ensure shrimp are de-shelled, de-veined, rinsed with water and patted dry.
  • Place shrimp in sauce and cook for 2-3 minutes each side, stir occasionally to ensure shrimp cook evenly.
  • Serve over rice and top with green onion and sesame seeds.

Notes

*We use low-sodium soy sauce as a preference. If you only have regular soy, add in a little less and taste to ensure the sauce doesn’t become too salty.
Shrimp will turn from grey/translucent to pink on the exterior and “white” in colour on the inside when properly cooked.
This dish could be for 2 -4 people depending on appetite size and amount of rice made.
