Key advice for cooking Chris’ Famous Teriyaki Salmon

Our number one secret to Chris’ Famous Teriyaki Salmon is the way you cook it. If you google how long to cook salmon for, you’ll generally find the rule of thumb is 10 minutes per inch (thickness). However, we HIGHLY recommend 4 – 7 minutes depending on how well-done you like your salmon. If the skin is off you’ll want to aim more towards the 4 minute mark. Cooking it less will make the salmon a little under cooked in the centre, but we enjoy it that way!

You can bake it in the oven, or grill it on the barbecue. We recommend on the BBQ – trust us on this one if you’ve never barbecued salmon! It will seriously change your mind about how you cook salmon and will enhance the flavour so much.

If you decide to take our advice, use salmon that has the SKIN ON, as it will be much easier for you to BBQ it. When cooking salmon this way, place the skin side down first! And remember, this is just a guide…times for cooking the salmon will vary depending on your barbecue! Check the thickest part of the salmon to determine if it is done to you liking.

It will take time to perfect the art of cooking salmon

Coming from the BBQ master, (aka our dad, Chris) it is important to not overcook the salmon. In order to get the melt-in-your-mouth teriyaki salmon, this is a crucial step to pay attention to. BUT, THIS WILL TAKE TIME! It’s taken us a few attempts to also master cooking this teriyaki salmon perfect every time, so be patient. It will be worth it in the end.

When you think it’s done, follow your instinct. That “I’m not sure, so I’ll leave it on for just another couple minutes,” could easily be the determining factor between a delicious meal or an overcooked dry salmon. Luckily, with this marinade, even overcooked a bit, the salmon won’t dry out as easily!

This teriyaki salmon recipe will easily become a staple meal in your household. Once you learn the art to cooking the salmon to perfection, you won’t be able to find yummier tasting salmon anywhere else. Even though it is one of our favourite fish to eat, we RARELY order a salmon dish when we go out to eat, because it NEVER tastes as good as the salmon we cook. It really is that good!
