Crispy Air Fryer Fish Fillets
We are back with another AIR FRYER recipe! We got so, so much love for our Air Fryer Coconut Shrimp recipe, so we started experimenting! We introduce…Crispy Air Fryer Fish Fillets!
We still can’t believe how crispy our food gets when we use our air fryer! If you don’t have one, but have been thinking about it..we highly recommend! They are so much fun to use and the results are amazing! While most of the recipes we are trying could be baked, fried or grilled, the air fryer just gets them SO crispy, it so EASY, quick and HEALTHY!!
These crispy air fryer fish fillets are perfect for any meal. With a classic panko, coconut and spice mixture you really can’t go wrong! We’ve paired these up with a healthy (greek yogurt based) tartar sauce, but if tartar sauce isn’t your thing, our Garlic Aioli would be PERFECT for these as well.
WHAT FISH TO USE
We used Cod Fish for this recipe, but white fish recipes are very transferable so you have lots of options! We recommend:
- Tilapia
- Haddock
- Catfish
Feel free to use any white fish you prefer! Just remember, cooking times will vary if you use a thiner or thicker fillet!
INSTRUCTIONS
To begin your will need 3 bowls, large enough to place your fish into.
- First Dish will be your flour, salt and pepper mixture.
- Second Dish will be your egg, milk and lemon juice mixture.
- Third Dish will panko, coconut and spice mixture.
Before you begin to dredge your fish, ensure the fillets are DRY (if you rinsed them) and thawed out (they shouldn’t be frozen)!
- Place your fish into the first bowl and coat with flour.
- Move it to the egg mixture and dredge. Let any excess egg drip off before placing in the third dish.
- Place fish in the third and final dish. Coat with panko, shredded coconut and spices. Make sure the fish is completely covered!
- Place fish fillets into air fryer – spacing out evenly so none are touching each other! You may have to do a few rounds depending on how many fish fillets you are making! It is crucial to not overcrowd the air fryer to ensure the fish get crispy!
- Cook for about 10-12 minutes (depending on size of fillets) – flipping half way through!
AIR FRYER TIPS
- You will need an Air Fryer with a BASKET (or something similar)! Our air fryer originally just had an arm that slowly rotated, which is great for fries, but not great for anything that has breading because it just fell off!
- Our air fryer doesn’t have a temperature gauge. Based off research and other recipes – for these fish fillets the temperature should be set to 400℉ if your air fryer requires you to input a temperature.
- If you don’t have a non-stick surface on your air fryer, simply spray a light coating of cooking spray to your basket to ensure the fish do not stick!
How to make the Homemade Tartar Sauce
Tartar sauce is a classic dipping sauce for many fish recipes. In most recipes, the main base of the sauce is mayonnaise…and don’t get us wrong, using mayonnaise will result in a creamy, delicious sauce but, it isn’t the healthiest. So we decided to experiment with a healthier alternative…greek yogurt!
We LOVE this guilt free tartar sauce. Made with greek yogurt as the base, it *does taste a little bit different* than your classic tartar sauce, but not enough for us to be reaching back for that mayonnaise. Give it a try!
You will need:
- Greek Yogurt
- Horseradish
- Dill Pickles
- Capers
- Lemon
- Dijon Mustard
- Worcestershire Sauce
- Fresh Dill
- Garlic Powder
Mix it all together and bam! Healthy, homemade tartar sauce. Honestly, this will take less than 5 minutes! So, while the fish is cooking in your air fryer, whip this together! AND, if greek yogurt isn’t your thing, simply replace it with mayonnaise (we are not judging!!) OR try doing half mayo, half greek yogurt! We love a good compromise.

- Thaw fish fillets and cut into smaller pieces (if necessary in order for your fillets to fit into your air fryer). Ensure fish is completely dry before beginning the coating process.
- You will need 3 wide bowls. In one bowl mix flour, salt and pepper. In a second bowl, beat egg, milk and lemon juice. In the third bowl, mix panko, unsweetened coconut, garlic powder, parsley, chilli powder and salt.
